My poem, “The Artist and His Volcano” after artist James Turrell’s installation “Volcano at Roden Crater, Arizona”  an ever-changing theater of natural phenomena isolating the light of the sun, moon, stars and planets will be published January, 2023, in the Earthly edition of The Polaris Trilogy. It will be sent to the Moon when the NASA flight is launched. (Now scheduled for 2024). My gratitude to Joyce Brinkman the inaugural Poet Laureate of Indiana and lead editor of the Polaris Anthologies.

These Anthologies will be part of the payload of the SpaceX/Astrobotic Technologies’ Griffin Lander/NASA VIPER Rover scheduled to be on the South Pole of the moon.  Our ambition is to represent each country on earth. There will be print versions here on earth, as well! Each anthology has a theme: Africa and Europe have the earthly themes of Rock, Air, and Water. Asia, North and Central America have the theme of Stars, Sun, and Moon. South America, Australia, and Antarctica have the themes of Ice, Wind, and Fire.

Sam Peralta, the creator of The Lunar Codex, the name of the launch, developed the idea of this “museum” after being a part of a similar project. Peralta, who was one of 125 authors on the Writers on the Moon project, which was a lunar time capsule of contemporary writing, was inspired to branch out to art beyond writing and created Artists on the Moon to broaden the reach by sourcing more space on other spacecraft.

“The Lunar Codex started as a project to spread hope during a dark time—the years of the COVID-19 pandemic on Earth,” Peralta wrote on his website. “The Codex is a message-in-a-bottle to the future, so that travelers who find these time capsules might discover some of the richness of our world today.
